Ingredients

  1. 2 lbStew beef
  2. 2 tbspVegetable oil
  3. 2 cupWater
  4. 1 tbspWorcestershire sauce
  5. 1 cloveGarlic peeled
  6. 1Bay leaves
  7. 1 mediumOnion sliced
  8. 1 tspSalt
  9. 1 tspSugar
  10. 1/2 tspPepper
  11. 1/2 tspPaprika
  12. 1Ground allspice or ground cloves
  13. 3 largeCarrots, sliced
  14. 3Ribs celery, chopped
  15. 2 tbspCornstarch

Cooking Instructions

    Brown meat in hot oil.

    Add water, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, bay leaves, onion, salt, pepper, paprika, and allspice.

    Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours. Remove bay leaves and garlic clove.

    Remove bay leaves and garlic clove.

    Add carrots and celery.

    Cover and cook 30 to 40 minutes longer.

    To thicken gravy, remove 2 cups hot liquid.

    Using a separate bowl, combine 1/4 cup water and cornstarch until smooth.

    Mix with a little hot liquid and return mixture to pot. Stir and cook until bubbly.
