This was how my grandfather used to cook. Learned by my mother and perfected over 30 years. If you follow it exactly you will get the best taste. I included instructions for heat too which play major role getting the correct moisture on it . Enjoy
Steps

Wash rice and lentils and set aside in water for 15 minutes

Slice onion into thin strips

Heat oil on medium heat
- 4
Add onion, cardamom, cinnamon and stir it until the onion has turned translucent.

turn off the heat and add ground ginger and garlic. Stir it for a minute.

Add rice and lentil along with water that was set aside before.

Turn on high heat and stir the contents until all are mixed togather.

Add Tumeric powder and stir.

Wait until water starts to boil. Add salt and stir it.

Lower the heat to low and cover the pot making sure that steam is kept inside.

After 15 minutes check the rice and lentil if it is cooked and all water is evaporated.

Turn off th heat and sprinkle melted ghee over the rice an cover it until ready to serve.
