I have also done these substituting coconut oil for the shortening with good success!
Steps

Beat shortening until soft

Gradually beat in sugars and vanilla until light and creamy

Sift dry ingredients together.

In another bowl combine 1/4 cup from the dry ingredients, the gumdrops, oatmeal and coconut.

Beat dry ingredients into shortening mixture in about two parts alternating with the egg

Stir In gumdrop mixture
- 7
Form into about 1 inch balls. Place on greased cookie sheet (or use parchment paper). Flatten with spatula dipped in milk

Bake at 350°F for approx 10 min
