This has been a favorite on my family as long as I can recall,it was always the first on the list for my children's birthday tea parties and one that I would make on holidays etc

Cream butter and sugar well and stir in flour and pinch of salt.Knead well and place in jelly roll pan. bake at 325 F for 30 minutes until pale golden.

For Topping place all ingredients except chocolate into pan. Bring to boil stirring continuously for 5 minutes.

Pour topping over cooled shortbread and leave to cool and set

Place chocolate into pan over hot water to melt and smooth over top, mark with sharp knife into squares and cut when set
