Omena in Luo, Dagaa in Swahili, Uvuoni in Maragoli, or silver cyprinid (Rastrineobola argentea) also known as the Lake Victoria sardine, is a small silvery sardine-like fish.
They are delicious, very tasty and easy to prepare, and have the following health benefits not to mention but a few; rich in calcium, good source of iron, zinc, protein & vitamin D, may prevent asthma in children.

Steps

Warm some water, wash clean the omenas until the water comes out clean. Let it sit in a strainer for say 5 minutes to drain All the water as you prepare the other ingredients ready.

In a cooking pot, put the oil, let it heat well, add garlic and ginger, cook for a minute or two. Add your onions, cook till brown, add the capsicum and cook till soft. Now add your tomatoes and cook to make a thick gravy.

Heat your cooking pan, put two tablespoonfuls of cooking oil and let it heat well. Add your Omena, and cook them in a medium heat till they are a little crunchy, they should not burn or over cook.

Now add them to the gravy mix, add some salt. Cook for a minute, add Dhania and cook for two minutes, add very little water, lower your heat and cook for another five minutes. It is now ready, let it set aside as you make your Ugali (Sima).

Serve your Accompaniment (Omena) with hot Ugali. Enjoy!
