Homemade Flour Tortillas
This is a really standard and simple recipe, but adding here for quantity reference for 2 people. Makes 6 small tortillas
Cooking Instructions
- 1
Mix the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl
- 2
then add the butter and mix by hand or with a pastry cutter until it forms a coarse powder
- 3
Add the hot water 1 tsp at a time and continue to mix well with your hands until the dough starts to stick together
- 4
Then turn out the dough onto a lightly floured board and kneed for a few minutes until it forms a a smoother consistency shown here
- 5
Break the dough into 6 equal pieces and form each first into a ball then squash into a small disc. Let these rest for 30 minutes under a damp cloth
- 6
Heat up a pan on medium hight without any oil, then roll out your first tortilla with a rolling pin lightly dusted with flour
- 7
When the pan is hot, throw on your first tortilla.
- 8
After about 30 seconds it should start to bubble as shown here. If not your pan may not be hot enough so check that. (This 30 seconds should be just enough time to roll out the next tortilla so you're ready to keep moving)
- 9
Flip the tortilla over and cook for another 20 - 30 seconds, then put onto a plate covered by a damp cloth and start cooking your next tortilla!

When you make tortillas, pay attention to the texture of the dough. The amount of water specified in this recipe is intended as a starting point only. When you know what texture you are shooting for, you can adjust the water to get that perfect texture every time. Ryan Goodwin -

These tortillas are easy to make and you can use them for quesadillas, chimichangas, and Mexican burritos. Fill them with ham, chicken, beef, eggs, cheese, or anything you like. They're great for serving as a snack.I especially like them for breakfast, filled with scrambled eggs. I add ham, sausage, and cheese. When I mention cups, tablespoons, and teaspoons, they are all level and use standard US measuring cups and spoons.https://youtu.be/jfpJVa_5bR4 Jon MichelenaTranslated from Cookpad Chile -

I made a successful soft tortilla that will roll up even when cold.Roll out the dough then gently coax it spread with both hands to shape it into circles.Turn over the dough to the other side once the dough starts to puff up and is browned.Cold tortillas are delicious enough, but you can warm them up in a skillet over low heat, or lightly microwave them.
