This bean recipe with ham is a true Southern comfort food. It's bursting with flavor galore of smoked paprika, cumin and cayenne pepper. Nothing like having that tender thick perfection on a slice of buttered bread or having a chunk of cornbread to go with it.

Ingredients

  1. 2 poundspinto beans
  2. 6ham slices (I use already cooked)
  3. 4 cupswater
  4. 1/2 cupMustard (secret ingredient)
  5. 1 tbspworsteshire sauce
  6. 2 tbspbeef soup base
  7. 1medium yellow onion
  8. 5garlic cloves (minced)
  9. Spices
  10. 1 tspground mustard
  11. 1 tsporegano
  12. 1 tbsponion powder
  13. 1 tbspgarlic powder
  14. 1 tspground cumin
  15. 1 tspthyme
  16. 1 tspground turmeric
  17. 1 tbspsmoked paprika
  18. 1/8 tspground cayenne pepper
  19. to tasteSalt and pepper

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

    Soak beans for 10 mins.

    Add the water, soup base, onion garlic, mustard and all the seasonings.

    Boil for 30 minutes then turn heat to medium and put a lid on and let simmer for 4 hours or until done or Place in a crock pot on high for 3 hours or until done. Garnish with green onions and a slice of warm cornbread.
