Bacon Spinach Swirls

My version of spinach spiral appetizers. A favorite at get togethers, never have any left over.
Cooking Instructions
- 1
Preheat oven to 400°F.
- 2
Beat egg and water and set aside.
- 3
Mix shredded cheese, parmesan cheese, garlic powder, black pepper and salt. Set aside.
- 4
Unfold pastry sheet onto lightly floured surface (That is important and it will stick, if it's not lightly floured!). I use a sheet of wax paper on the counter for easy clean up and to roll up it up (you will see what I mean further down in the directions).
- 5
Brush pastry with egg mixture.
- 6
Sprinkle cheese mix on pastry.
- 7
Sprinkle Bacon on top of cheese mix.
- 8
Sprinkle spinach on top of bacon. (I tear up tiny pieces with my fingers)
- 9
Roll up pastry, jelly roll style. I use the wax paper to roll it up, and twist up the ends so it looks like a package.
- 10
Put pastry roll in freezer for at least 15 minutes to firm up just a bit.
- 11
Remove from freezer and slice. I like mine thinner so I go just under 1/2 inch. If anything falls out of the slice, when you place it on your baking sheet just stuff it back in the swirl.
- 12
Place swirls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. (This helps with clean up, and makes the bottoms crisp up nicely).
- 13
Brush top of swirls with egg mixture.
- 14
Bake for 14-16 minutes or until golden brown.
- 15
Best when served warm but still tasty when served after they have cooled.
- 16
TIPS: can use turkey bacon, or omit bacon for a meat free option. Also can add diced pimentos for contrasting color.
I usually get 20-24 swirls out of one sheet of puff pastry, depending on how thick I cut them.
If they are hard to cut, wrap them back up and throw them back in the freezer. They are easier to cut when partially frozen.

I wanted to serve something like this for brunch. I made mine easily with frozen puff pastry. It's easier if you bake the puff pastry on the day before making the quiche. I recommend using a chunk of cheese; preferably parmigiano reggiano or comte! It really makes it different from when you use store-bought grated cheese or easy melting cheese. The 'Best Before' date on the loaf of bread was close, so I decided to make some tasty quiches.Instead of bread, you can use frozen pie crust. Alternatively, you can pour the quiche filling into a ramekin (small oven-proof dish) without bread. It is nice! With or without bread crust, your choice! Recipe by Tomomaki0313 cookpad.japan
