Cooking Instructions

In a wok take fenugreek seeds wash it and add 1/2 cup water,1/2 tsp salt.boil it for 2-3 minutes on high flame. then turn off the flame and leave the seeds in water for half hour.then strain the water.keep the water in a bowl for later use to cook khichdi

Now in another wok boil the rice with two cups of water add 1 tsp salt or as your taste.cook the rice 70% then strain the water.keep rice aside.

In a pressure cooker add oil heat it.then add onion slices and saute,when it turns light brown add ginger garlic paste saute few seconds then add curry leaves,green chillies,saute one minute then add boiled fenugreek seeds add little salt and mix all.stir occasionally and cooked for 3-4 minutes.now add cooked rice and boil fenugreek water then pressure cook for one whistle.release the pressure naturally.serve hot.

Childhood memories: Sunday was family day. Our traditional Sunday lunch would always include a fresh deep fried fish and Hasmo. This would be served on a thaal which is a big silver plate. “Hasmo” for us means mixing everything together. We’d mix the dhaal, rice , roti , fried chillies , kachumber (onion salad) together in the middle of the thaal and then make a tiny space to put the hot charcoal and then pour hot ghee over the mixture. We would then cover all with another big plate to smoke it. Once smoked we would all enjoy and eat together. It is a family food that I really miss!I would call this dish that I made today as ‘Hasmo’ but other people call it ‘Dal Khichdi’ or ‘Khichdi’This is how I made mine. M.A.DFoodie -
