Ingredients

12 minutes
  1. 1 cupsoftened butter
  2. 1 cupsugar
  3. 1 tspnutmeg
  4. 2 tsppure vanilla
  5. 2eggs, beaten
  6. 1/2 tspsalt
  7. 1 Tbsbaking powder
  8. 3 cupsAP flour
  9. For coating:
  10. 1/3 cupsugar
  11. 1 Tbscinnamon
  12. Pinchnutmeg

Cooking Instructions

    Preheat oven to 350

  2. 2

    With electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until fluffy

  3. 3

    Add nutmeg, vanilla and egg. Mix thoroughly

  4. 4

    Add powder and mix

  5. 5

    Add flour slowly, and scrape down mixer as needed

  6. 6

    Scoop cookies, rolling each cookie into a ball with your hands

  7. 7

    In separate bowl, mix sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg for topping

  8. 8

    Roll each cookie in topping a d place on cookie sheet

  9. 9

    They will not spread but will need to be flattened with a spatula before baking

    Bake about 12 minutes, centers should be soft but not doughy.

    For traditional sugar cookies, just roll out and cut the dough into shapes. It won't need to be refrigerated. Frost or decorate as you like

    For peppermint "kringles", omit nutmeg and use only 1 tsp of vanilla. Add 2-3 tsp peppermint extract and 1 tsp of red food coloring.

    Roll each kringle in red and green nonpareils or regular sugar instead of the cinnamon sugar

Started cooking/baking with Gram just as soon as I was old enough to stand in a chair, with her apron tied around my chest. Made my first solo Thanksgiving meal at age 8. Putting a new flair on classic nothern New England style cooking.

I followed the recipe to the T. However, I could not get the texture to that of shape cookies. Was I supposed to let the dough rest in the fridge first?
