Dal kanda

Dal Kanda is a simple and authentic Maharashtrian dish using Chana dal and onions. This is the traditional dish of Saoji community.
Kanda in Marathi means Onion and not surprisingly this dish has onions in abundance.

Dal Kanda is a simple and authentic Maharashtrian dish using Chana dal and onions. This is the traditional dish of Saoji community.

Steps

In a pan heat 2 tsp oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, bay leaves and asafoetida. Add some curry leaves, chopped coriander and onions. roast it till onion become soft.

Once done add ginger-garlic paste and chopped tometos and saute. In the meantime mix chilli powder, turmeric powder, kanda-lasun masala, goda masala and garam masala and sauté further for few more minutes.

Now add the chana dal to the pan. Add salt and saute well till the dal absorbs all flavours of the spices. Add water as per your desired consistency. Cover & cook on low flame till the dal gets cooked well. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with roti, rice or bhakri.
