Bitter gourd has many health benefits.It helps in maintaining blood sugar level, lowers bad cholesterol, protects from cold and flu,cleanses liver,aids in digestion,weightloss,good for hair and skin and boosts our immune system.This recipe uses pumpkin to add sweetness and balance the bitter taste of karela.In Bengali cuisine it is a tradition to serve bitter karela or fried neem leaves with some rice as the first item in lunch be it stir fried, boiled or curry which is a healthy way to start a lunch.

Slit bittergourd and deseed.Chop into semi circles.Cube pumpkin into small pieces.Smear little salt in them.Chop finely 1 onion.Heat oil in a pan and sprinkle kalonji and 1dry red chilli.

When they splutter,add chopped onion and fry lightly.Add chopped bittergourd and pumpkin.Fry in low flame.Add red chilli powder,turmeric,salt and sugar to taste.Sprinkle little water and cook covered on low flame till done.

Serve as a side dish with rice in lunch.
