Basil seeds are tiny seeds that look similar to black sesame seeds. Apart from growing basil plants , we can also eat them. We can eat seeds of sweet basil. Basil seeds are commonly known as sabja and tukmaria seeds.
Basil seeds have long history of use in Ayurveda and Chinese medicine. Basil seeds are good source of minerals like iron, calcium and magnesium which could help fill important shortfalls in our diet. They are high in soluble fiber which may promote gut health, blood sugar control. They also contain plant compounds and omega-3 fats.
Basil seeds can used after soaking in water and blooming them. They are generally used in smoothies, milk shakes, salad and pudding. However we can use them in making soups, breads, pancakes etc.
When I hear the name of basil seeds, FALOODA pops up in my mind. Falooda is a popular Indian summer drink. It is a very delicious and perfect dessert for hot summers. Origin of this layered dessert is Iran but is popular in India, Pakistan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, middle east and Turkey. In India it was introduced by the Parasis who migrated to India from Iran.
Basic falooda is prepared with basil seeds, vermicelli, rose syrup and milk. Adding ice cream is optional. Summer is in full swing and king of fruit, mangoes are also available easily. So here is my favourite mango falooda.
