Makar Sankranti, the harvest festival falls on the 14th or 15th day of the month of January, on which day the Sun leaves the sign of Sagittarius and enters the sign of Capricorn. During this period, the force of cold is very much increased, in such a time, hot foods are consumed compulsorily in order to maintain body heat. Jaggery and Sesame provide the required amount of nutrition during the cold season to keep the body warm.
Sesame seeds are full of zinc, selenium, copper, iron, vitamin B6, vitamin E, so are very healthy. A mixture of sesame seeds (called "til" in Marathi) and jaggery (called "gul" in Marathi) is used to prepare sweets (ladoo or modak). “Maghi Ganeshotsav” – Ganesh Jayanti is also celebrated during this period. Tilgul Modak is prepared as an offering to Lord Ganesha.
