Trifle is a decious and attractive layered dessert. It has the layers of distinct flavours and textures. Usually it has the layers of crust (sponge cake or biscuits), fruit, custard, jelly/jam, whipped cream and nuts. You may combine 3, more or all components in your pudding, however the crust and the pudding are compulsory. Also, trifles are consumed with all 3 layers in a single bite, so it is advisable not to go beyond 3 layers.

  1. 1

Prepare custard and refrigerate it as instructed in the recipe attached. The custard must be at least at room temperature or cold at the time of use. This way it will set well.

In a dessert cup, first lay 1½ tbsp layer of the biscuit crust. Pour ½ tbsp custard over it and spread. Place about 3-4 pcs of gulabjamuns at the walls of the cup so that it is seen as a layer. Pour another 1 spoon of custard over it. Place 1 pc of gulabjamun in the middle.

  7. 7

You can also set the trifle in a dessert tray instead of individual servings. It is less time-consuming.

  8. 8

To replace custard : grind 1 cup paneer till silky smooth. Add ½ cup powdered sugar and ¼ tsp cardamom powder and grind once just to blend. Add 1 cup cream or as much as is needed for thick consistency.
