∆∆ A comforting and nourishing dudhi kadhi made with love, just like my mom prepares. Light, soothing and perfect for everyday meals, this traditional recipe brings both taste and health together.

∆ Cooking is not just about making food; it is about love, care, and memories passed down through generations. Today, my mother-in-law, whom I love like my own mother, was not feeling well, so I wanted to prepare something light, comforting, and nourishing for her. While cooking this Dudhi ni Kadhi, I remembered my late mother, who always believed that food made with love has the power to heal.
This simple sattvic meal is dedicated to both my mothers — one who taught me the warmth of traditional cooking and one whom I now care for with the same love and respect. Since my mother-in-law does not prefer coriander, I made it just the way she likes. Soft, soothing, and filled with homemade comfort, this meal truly came straight from the heart ❤️

Ingredients

  1. Main :
  2. 1medium-sized Bottle Gourd (Dudhi)
  3. Kadhi Base :
  4. 1 cupsour curd
  5. 2 tbspgram flour (besan)
  6. as neededWater or buttermilk
  7. Ginger-Chili Past :
  8. 1 inchGinger & 2 green chilies, crushed using a mortar and pestle
  9. Seasoning :
  10. 1/2 tspturmeric powder
  11. Salt to taste
  12. 1 tbspsugar
  13. Tempering (Tadka) :
  14. 1 tbsppure ghee
  15. 1/2 tspfenugreek seeds
  16. 1/2 tspcumin seeds
  17. 1small cinnamon stick
  18. 1 pinchasafoetida (hing)
  19. 1 bunchCurry leaves

Steps

25 minutes
  1. 1

    Wash, peel, and cut the bottle gourd into equal-sized cubes. Keep them soaked in water.

    Boil water in a pot and cook the bottle gourd cubes until they are about 75% done.

    Meanwhile, whisk together curd and gram flour until smooth. Add water or buttermilk to adjust the consistency.

    Add turmeric, salt, sugar, and crushed ginger-chili paste to the kadhi mixture and cook on a low flame.

    Drain the partially cooked bottle gourd cubes.

    Heat ghee in a pan and prepare the tempering with fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds, cinnamon, hing, and curry leaves.

    Add the boiled bottle gourd cubes to the tempering and saute for 5 minutes so the flavors blend well.

    Transfer the sauteed bottle gourd into the simmering kadhi mixture and let it boil together for a few minutes.
    Turn off the heat and serve warm.

    Serving Suggestion :
    I served this warm Dudhi ni Kadhi with simple moong dal khichdi and potato sabji for my mother-in-law. It also pairs beautifully with bajra rotla or soft phulkas.
