Easter is coming up, and we've made this traditional dish my mother taught me.

First, make the syrup so it can cook while you prepare the torrijas. In a saucepan, combine 4 1/4 cups water (1 liter), 8 tablespoons sugar, and a cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil, then simmer on low heat for about 15 minutes. Let cool.

Set out a plate with milk and sugar, and next to it another plate with the 5 eggs, beaten.

Prepare the pre-sliced bread from the package.

Take a slice of bread and dip it into the milk, letting it soak. Let any excess drip off.

Dip the soaked bread into the beaten eggs, coating it well, then transfer it to the frying pan.

Fry in hot oil, turning until golden brown to your liking.

Remove and place on a plate lined with paper towels to drain.

In another plate, mix sugar and ground cinnamon. Once the torrija has cooled a bit, coat it in the cinnamon sugar mixture.

Remove from the cinnamon sugar and place on a serving dish.

Repeat the previous steps with all the bread slices and arrange the torrijas on a serving dish.
