Apple strudel ( German: Apfelstrudel , Czech: strudel) is a traditional Viennese strudel, a popular pastry in Australia and in many countries in Europe that once belonged to the Austro- Hungarian Empire ( 1867-1918)

Preheat the oven to 190C. Line a baking tray with baking parchment.

Mix the apples with the cinnamon, lemon zest and juice, sugar and raisins. In a small frying pan, melt 20 g butter and fry breadcrumbs until golden brown, then add to the apple mixture.

Melt the remaining butter in a pan. On a clean, dry tea- towel by lay a sheet of the filo and brush with some of the melted butter. Lay another sheet on top and repeat until you have used all of the filo.

Pile the filling along the length of the pastry along on side about 2-3 cm in from the pastry up to enclose the filling. Tuck the ends in and roll seam- side down onto the lined baking sheet. Brush with the remaining melted butter.

Bake for 40-50 minutes, until golden- brown. Leave to cool to room temperature and dust with icing sugar. Slice and serve with ice cream
