Steps
- 1
To make your red velvet cake, measure your flour, butter, baking powder, baking soda and cocoa powder into a bowl and mix together, then set aside
- 2
Then mix your red colour and buttermilk and stir.I used powdered red,you can omitt this step if using liquid colour.
- 3
In a bowl of a stand mixer beat your oil, butter and sugar and vanilla untill fluffy
- 4
Add eggs and beat
- 5
Alternatively add in your butter milk mixture and flour in three addition and beat until smooth.Use a spatula to scrape the side and bottom of your bowl.
- 6
Pour into a greased pan
- 7
For the chocolate cake, measure all your dry ingredients into a bowl.
- 8
In a bowl of a stand mixer, beat your oil, butter and sugar until fluffy
- 9
Add eggs and beat
- 10
Alternatively add in your buttermilk and dry ingredients together and beat. scrape the side and bottom with a spatula and mix until smooth
- 11
Pour into a greased pan and bake for 40 mins or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean
- 12
Allow the cakes to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, transfer unto a wire rack and allow to cool completely. Then refrigerate for 30 mins to firm up to make it easy to cut out our circle rings.
- 13
After refrigeration, trim the top and divide each cake into 2 layers.
- 14
I baked a 6 inch cake,so I used a circle cutter of 4 and 2 inches in diameter to cut out 3 rings from each layer, you can use bowls of thesame dimension.
- 15
To assemble, place one of the large chocolate rings, then followed by red velvet and then chocolate.
- 16
Do thesame for the red velvet
- 17
To make my light buttercream frosting,I added all my ingredients together into a bowl and used my hand mixer to mix until creamy.
- 18
Lay the first layer with the largest chocolate ring and spread with buttercream, whipped cream or any frosting of your choice, then followed by the layer with the large red velvet ring.
- 19
Repeat the process with the remaining 2 layers. You can also spread frosting on the sides and top and decorate with flowers, sprinkles, ribbon or cake crumb. Then chill in the fridge before cutting and serving
- 20
Serve with any drink of your choice
