Lemon rice elumichai sadam

Tamil Nadu , one of the hottest states of the country is located in the Southern part of India. Though there are many non- vegetarian dishes in Tamil cuisine but mostly vegetarian food is there due to large population of Tamil Brahmins.
If we look at the vegetarian dishes , Dosa, Idli, Pongal etc are most common breakfast items served with coconut chutney & sambhar. Various Sundals are consumed as evening snacks. Various rice dishes are there in their meals. How can we forget Filter Kapi ( we know it as filter coffee). Then vada, uttapam, paysam, paniyaram..List goes on.
Elumichai Sadam - lemon rice is most common rice cooked in house holds of Tamil Nadu. It is comfort food , especially in summers. It is a must try dish.
This flavourful & sour rice , with crunchiness of peanuts is easy to make. Lemon rice tastes best with papadum, it can also be served with coconut chutney and vegetable salad.

Heat oil, fry peanuts till they become crunchy. Remove it. I. Same oil fry cashew nuts & remove it.

Now in same pan and oil add mustard seeds, once they crackle, add urad dal. Saute till it turns golden. Now add dry red chillies, green chillies and curry leaves. Saute till red chillies change colour. Turn off the heat, add turmeric powder & asafoetida, mix well.

Then add cooked rice and salt. Add fried peanuts, cashew nuts and lemon juice. Mix well & cover it for few minutes.

Serve with papadam or just have plain lemon rice. Can adjust quantity of lemon juice as per your taste.
