Instant pot navy bean and ham soup

I love my instant pot and I wanted to make a bean soup from dried beans that didn't take all day. From start to finish this recipe took about hour and half between chopping and waiting for pressure to build. Still not bad for a soup that usually takes several hours just soften. The beans in this recipe come out soft, and the liquid is thickened as well by them. This recipe also freezes really well too for up to a month.

Ham and Bean Soup Ham and Bean Soup
This isn't the most traditional way of making ham and bean soup but still has amazing flavor. I didn't use ham hock, ham shank or bacon which seems to be common. We used a homemade ham stock that we had in the freezer made from the bone of a spiral ham. For the ham chunks I used a combination of leftover ham from a holiday meal and the last bit of the ham I smoked this past summer. If you don't have smoked ham or double smoked in my case you can use a smoked turkey leg and let it simmer in the pot. Or even a drop or two of liquid smoke just to give the extra depth of flavor. Also used the dehydrated onion in place of fresh chopped because it seemed like it would just get lost in there. The only thing I might do differently next time is add spinach or another green to the party. jason williams -

Bean & Ham Hock soup Bean & Ham Hock soup
Bean soup with the slightly smoky flavor of ham hocks (smoked pig knuckle). Of course ham could be substituted, I just enjoy the extra richness ham hocks bring. Takes awhile to cook, but it is more, do a little prep, cook for awhile, so you can do other things while this cooks. This has an awesome flavor, and I usually buy a bean mix, well, I like to mix it up a little. So try it, and enjoy. Fo Fa
