Ingredients

  1. 1 cupchana dal
  2. 2 cupswater
  3. 1/4 teaspoonturmeric
  4. 1/2 teaspoonsalt
  5. 2medium sized tomatoes - chopped
  6. 1medium onion - chopped
  7. 1 inchginger - finely chopped
  8. 4-5garlic - finely chopped
  9. 1green chili - chopped
  10. 3/4 teaspooncumin seeds
  11. 1 teaspoonred chilli powder
  12. 1/2 teaspoonturmeric powder
  13. 1 teaspooncoriander powder
  14. 1/2 teaspoongaram masala powder
  15. 1/2 teaspoondry mango/amchur powder (optional)
  16. 1 teaspoonkasuri methi
  17. 1 pinchasafoetida
  18. 2 tablespoonoil
  19. Small handful of chopped Coriander

Steps

  1. 1

    Wash and rinse the chana dal until water runs clear

  2. 2

    Then allow to soak for a minimum of 30 minutes, the longer the better

  3. 3

    Then add the chana dal, 2 cups of water, turmeric and salt to a pressure cooker. Cook until the dal is soft, do not drain the water

  4. 4

    In a pan, add the oil and allow to heat up before adding the cumin seeds and chilli powder. Allow to cook until the cumin seeds begin to pop

  5. 5

    Add in the green chilli, onion, garlic, ginger and tomatoes before cooking for 2-3 minutes until all soft

  6. 6

    Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala, asafoetida and amchur powder (optional). Taste and adjust for salt

  7. 7

    Add the dal and kasuri methi to the masala and cook to desired consistency

  8. 8

    Take off the heat and stir in chopped coriander, serve with basmati rice, naan, roti, etc.
