Sooji or semolina (rava)is a delicious variant from the regular upma or other rava breakfast recipes. As the name suggests,these are bite sized ball shaped sooji dumplings which are steamed and tempered to make it more flavourful and appealing. Sooji balls have flavoring ingredients like coconut,curry and coriander leaves,and tempered with mustard,cumin,urad dal, hing,grated ginger,finely chopped onion and green chilli.Fried cashewnuts are added for some crunch.These masala tossed semolina balls are very easy to make and can be served as a healthy breakfast or tea time or tiffin snack.It can also be served as a party appetizer .

Dry roast sooji or semolina (rava) lightly.Set aside.Heat 1 tbsp oil and sprinkle grated ginger,hing,finely chopped onion,chopped green chilli and few curry leaves.Fry lightly and pour water and 1/2 tsp salt and boil.

Add sooji in it and stir constantly so that there are no lumps and form into a dough.Cool partially and add few fried curry leaves and grated coconut.Knead into a tight dough.Smear oil in both palms and form into bite sized balls.

Boil water in a steamer or wok.Brush oil in the steamer plate and place all balls in it.Cover and steam cook for 10 to 12 minutes till spongy.

Allow the balls to cool.Heat oil in a pan and fry cashewnuts.In the remaining oil, sprinkle dry red chilli, mustard,cumin and split urad dal.When they crackle,add green chillies, turmeric,red chilli powder,curry leaves and add sooji balls and toss.

Sprinkle chopped coriander and lemon juice and toss again.Serve hot spicy steamed sooji balls as a healthy breakfast or as an evening snack as it is or with coconut,tamarind or tomato chutney and a cup of hot coffee or tea.
