Ingredients

20-30 minutes
4 servings
  1. 9 ozpaneer (about 250 grams)
  2. 3 tablespoonsall-purpose flour (about 24 grams)
  3. 2 tablespoonscornstarch (about 16 grams)
  4. 1/2 teaspoonred chili powder
  5. 1 teaspoonsoy sauce
  6. Oil for frying
  7. Salt to taste
  8. For the gravy*
  9. 2 tablespoonsoil (I used olive oil)
  10. 1medium onion, chopped
  11. 1medium green bell pepper, chopped
  12. 1 teaspoongarlic, finely chopped
  13. 1 teaspoonginger, finely chopped
  14. 2green chilies
  15. Salt to taste
  16. 1/2 teaspoonfreshly ground black pepper
  17. 2 teaspoonschili sauce
  18. 1 tablespoonvinegar
  19. 1 tablespoonsoy sauce
  20. 1 tablespoontomato ketchup
  21. 1 tablespooncornstarch (about 8 grams)

    Cut the paneer into cubes.

    In a bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, soy sauce, red chili powder, and salt with water to make a thin batter.

    Coat the paneer cubes in the batter. Heat oil in a pan and fry the paneer pieces until they are golden brown on both sides. Remove and set aside.

    Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a pan. Add the garlic, ginger, and green chilies, and stir-fry on high heat. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper, and continue to stir-fry on high heat. Keep the heat high, as this is important for Chinese-style recipes. Add soy sauce, chili sauce, tomato ketchup, and vinegar, and mix well. Add black pepper and salt, and mix again. Cook on high heat for 1 minute. Add a slurry made from cornstarch and water, and cook on high heat for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens.

    Add the fried paneer to the sauce and mix well. Serve hot. Chilli Paneer tastes great with chow mein or Chinese fried rice.
