How To Peel the Inner Skin of Simmered Chestnuts

cookpad.japan
cookpad.japan @cookpad_jp

This is how to strip off outer skin when making chestnuts simmered in their inner skins. I found an easy-to-use tool this year, too. For experienced folks, it's probably best to use a knife. I recommend this method for novices or for helping children.

Be careful not to cut yourself with the knife. Recipe by Hakuundou

Steps

  1. 1

For this trick, use a thin teaspoon and kitchen knife (or a paring knife).

  2. 2

Put chestnuts in an enamel-coated pot and fill with enough water to cover, then bring to a boil. Turn off the heat, then cool. Keep the chestnuts in the hot water, taking them out only to peel them.

  3. 3

Peel the outer skin from the flat side of the chestnut either from the bottom or the top with a knife. ※ Depending on the variety, some chestnuts are easier to peel than others.

  4. 4

Stick the end of the spoon under the outer skin like this. Remove any of the remaining outer skin with your fingers or a knife, then soak in water.
