Cafe Au Lait Coffee Flavored Mushipan (Steamed Bread)

Don't you sometimes just want to eat a grown-up flavored steamed bread? I was always thinking about making something like that, but didn't quite go through with it. With this combination of ingredients you can enjoy them with your children too. If you love coffee, you can add more to make it even more bitter. This is a simple and basic recipe, so please add your own variations and have fun.

I added richness by using light brown sugar. Just like plain steamed bread, make sure not up over mix it, be sure to use a cloth, and please steam at a high heat. Please make sure to dissolve the coffee well. The size of each steamer varies from store to store, so place that in a pot, civet with a plate, and you should be good to go.

Ingredients

4 servings
  1. 1 tbspInstant coffee
  2. 1 tbspBoiling water
  3. 100 gramsCake flour
  4. 1 tspBaking powder
  5. 50 gramsLight brown sugar (or your favorite sugar)
  6. 75 mlMilk
  7. 1 dashSalt
  8. 1 dashToppings of your choice such as walnuts or chocolate chips

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

Add hot water to the instant coffee and dissolve properly. Put water into the steamer, and start heating the steamer over high heat.

  2. 2

Sift the cake flour and baking powder into a bowl and add in the light brown sugar and salt. Add the milk to the dissolved coffee and mix well; add this to the bowl and mix again.

  3. 3

Distribute the batter into the cups, add toppings of your choice such as walnuts etc., steam for 10 minutes over high heat, and it is done.

  4. 4

Key point: Measure out the ingredients properly; only lightly mix the ingredients together; and be sure to put the filled cups in the steamer after heating it up so plenty of steam is rising.

  5. 5

This is a rich "coffee chocolate steamed bread" version made with lots of coffee (1 1/2 tablespoons), and dark chocolate (6 pieces).

  6. 6

This version has chocolate and caramel chips. The coffee and caramel chips go so well together - delicious!

  7. 7

This one is topped with walnuts.

  8. 8

This one has chocolate chips both in the batter and on top.
