Totoro Cream-filled Melon Buns

I found out how to bake this bread while browsing bread that other people had baked online. It was too difficult to make the eyes with cookie dough so I gave up on that. Using chocolate is easier!

Even if the cookie dough gets burned or shifts, as long as you draw the face on it'll turn into a cute Totoro bun!! Recently I've been making the cookie dough first, then switching on the bread machine to knead the bread dough, then making the custard cream to save time. Recipe by Kobafumi

Ingredients

12 servings
  1. 12buns worth, made in a bread machine Bread dough
  2. 1Cookie dough
  3. 1Custard cream filling
  4. 1white and brown Chocolate pastry decorating pens
  5. 290to 300 grams Bread (strong) flur
  6. 1 1/2bars Use pieces of chocolate to fill the buns instead of custard cream
  7. 1 tbspof cocoa powder For the cocoa dough

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

Make the custard cream and chill it. Since it will be piped out, don't make it too stiff.

  2. 2

Make the cookie dough and divide it into 12 portions (20 g per portion) and chill in the refrigerator.

  3. 3

Make the bread dough in a bread machine. Fill a pastry bag with the custard cream. When the bread dough is done, divide it into 12 portions and rest for 10 minutes.

  4. 4

Cut off the dough parts for the ears. Fill the rest of the dough with the custard cream and wrap the dough around the cream.

  5. 5

If it's too much work to make custard cream, fill the buns with a piece of chocolate. It's easy and I recommend it! Kids will love this too!

  6. 6

Form the dough into egg shaped rolls, and add ears. Top with the rolled out cookie dough.

  7. 7

Cover with plastic wrap and a tightly wrung out moistened kitchen towel, and leave the dough for its 2nd rising for 35 to 45 minutes.

  8. 8

When the dough has doubled in size, bake in a preheated 190°C oven for 15 minutes.

  9. 9

When the bread is done baking and has cooled down a bit, draw on Totoro's eyes and whiskers with the chocolate pens.

  10. 10

    Done!

  11. 11

I tried making Totoro buns with cocoa dough. I just added 1 tablespoon of pure cocoa powder to the dough!!

  12. 12

Halloween pumpkin-melon bread! I added kabocha squash powder to the dough, and filled the buns with kabocha squash paste.

  13. 13

I made some Santa Claus shaped buns.
