Rinse and wash both dal and rice. Soak them for at least for 20 mins. Then drains and remove all water from dal & rice.

On low flame heat ghee in pan. Add cumin seeds, bay leaves, ginger paste, Hing and sautē for a min or two.

Next add onion, green chillies in a pan and fry till onion is translucent. Add tomatoes, salt, haldi powder and cook for 5 mins.

Next add drained dal and rice in the pan. Combine and Sautē for 2-3 mins. Add 4 to 5 cups of water or as per required depending on the consistency you want. Combine all together. Taste water and add salt if needed.
First put the gas on high flame and bring water to boil, then turn the gas to low flame and cook till lentils are soft. - 5
When Khichdi is almost done, put the lid on the pan and continue to cook for 3-4 mins. I made thick consistency of dal khichdi. To make thin consistency, If required more water then add hot water.
Pour 1 tsp of ghee over the hot khichdi for a better taste. Garnish with few chopped coriander leaves. - 6
Serve hot Dal Khichdi with papad and pickle.
