Dalgona or ppopgi is a Korean candy made with melted sugar and baking soda. It was a popular street snack in the 1970s and 1980s, and is still eaten as a retro food.
A popular street food from the 1960s and 1970s that’s been brought to international attention with Netflix’s new Korean drama, Squid Game, dalgona candy (also known as ppopgi), is a sweet but nutty candy that your kids will love to snack on. Dalgona was traditionally made with glucose solid, whereas ppopgi uses plain sugar, but the two names became interchangeable over time. You might find this sponge toffee-like sugar candy to be tricky to make at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be stamping out sweets like a pro. Break out the cookie cutters and make them in a variety of cutouts. It’s quite similar to making homemade caramel!

Steps

30 minutes
  1. 1

First grease the kitchen counter with oil. Then grease the cookie cutter with oil to get the design on the candy. Also have a wooden stick ready.

  2. 2

Now firstly take a tadka pan, add a tbsp of sugar in it. Now switch on the flame, keep the flame at the lowest. Donot stir it, the sugar will start melting on its own. Once it starts melting, quickly start stirring with the help of a spoon. (1 tbsp sugar and a pinch of baking soda will make one single candy at a time)

Now pour the mixture quickly but gently on the countertop, place a wooden stick on the centre of it. Let it set for few seconds then carefully place a cookie-mould or a small cap on top of it and press it gently over the candy. Then remove the cap/mould. It will get a nice design at the centre.
