Play dough

My four year old daughter loves playing with Play-Doh. However, the store-bought version tends to dry out quickly. This recipe yields a dough that stays softer and more malleable for a longer period of time. Plus, my daughter can help make it, so she gets to learn about measuring and mixing!
This recipe makes enough for three balls of dough that you can dye different colors. Divide all the ingredients in half if you want to make a smaller amount.

Steps
- 1
Assemble your ingredients.
- 2
Whisk the flour, salt, and cream of tartar together in a large bowl.
Be prepared for flour *everywhere* when your little helper measures and mixes. - 3
Add the vegetable oil. Mash and mix it until it’s coated by the flour.
- 4
Add the boiling water and mix until the dough comes together.
(Make sure your little helper is out of the way for this part!) ⚠️ - 5
Knead the dough until it is soft and smooth. (My little helper took some pictures! 📸)
- 6
Divide the dough into thirds.
- 7
Add a few drops of food coloring, then knead until it is fully incorporated.
- 8
You’re ready to play!
Store the dough in plastic ziplock bags labeled with the date. To keep the Play-Doh soft, add about a teaspoon of water to the dough before pressing the dough flat and sealing the bags. You can add a small amount of water after every play session. - 9
Notes:
🦄. Vegetable oil or canola oil will work in this recipe.
🦄. I use gel food coloring for bright colors, but water-based food coloring would also work.
🦄. Gloves are recommended for the kneading step so you won’t dye your skin with the food coloring. Once the dye is in the dough, it won’t leech out. - 10
Notes:
🦄. If you would like a scented dough, add a drop or two of essential oil.
🦄. Don’t let your little ones eat the dough! The flour isn’t fully cooked. Plus, it tastes like Neptune’s salty butthole 😝☠️
