Ingredients

40-45 minutes
5-6 servings
  • 3/4 cupwhole tuvar
  • 1 cupoil
  • 1 teaspoonmustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoonajwain
  • 1/2 teaspooncumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoonasafoetida
  • 200 gchopped spring onion
  • 3-4 tablespoonfresh green garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoonginger paste
  • 1 teaspooncrushed green chilies
  • 200 gchopped tomatoes
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoonturmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoonred chili powder
  • 1 teaspoongaram masala powder
  • 1 teaspoondhania jeera powder
  • 1/4 cupchopped coriander leaves
  • Chopped onion as required
  • Sev as required

Steps

40-45 minutes
  1. 1

    Wash and soak whole tuvar dal in warm water for 7-8 hours or overnight. Then cook in pressure cooker with enough water until 5-7 whistles.

    In a pan heat ghee and oil. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and ajwain. When mustard seeds crackles add asafoetida. Add crushed green chillies, ginger paste, chopped spring onions and green garlic paste. Saute for 3-4 minutes. Add chopped tomatoes and saute until oil separates.

    Add turmeric powder, dhania jeera powder, red chili powder and garam masala powder. Mix well. Add cooked tuvar and add required amount of water. Add salt and mix well.

    Cover with lid and cook for 5-7 minutes low flame. Tempting totha is ready to serve. Apply some chopped onion, sev and coriander leaves and serve with bajri rotla, buttermilk and garlic chutney.
