Do you know ‘Oyako’ Don’? It’s a very popular Japanese rice bowl dish. ‘Oyako’ means ‘Parent and Child’ and the dish is cooked with Chicken and Eggs. This dish is called ‘Tanin’ Don, and ‘Tanin’ means ‘stranger’ OR ‘unrelated person’. ‘Tanin’ Don is cooked with Pork and Eggs, sometimes Beef and Eggs, and those ingredients are unrelated. It’s a quick and easy rice bowl dish. Minced Pork OR Minced Beef can be used, but I like to use thinly sliced Pork Belly.

Ingredients

4 Servings
  • 400 gthinly sliced Pork *cut into bite-size pieces
  • 1Onion *sliced
  • 4Eggs *whisked
  • 1thick Spring Onion *thinly sliced diagonally
  • 4Servings freshly cooked Rice
  • Shichimi (Japanese Chilli Spice Mix)
  • Sauce
  • 1 cupDashi Stock *OR 1 cup Water & 1/2 teaspoon Dashi Powder
  • *Note: You can use Chicken Stock
  • 2 tablespoonSugar
  • 2 tablespoonMirin
  • 4-5 tablespoonsSoy Sauce

Steps

  1. 1

    Cut thinly sliced Pork into bite-size pieces. Prepare all other ingredients.

  2. 2

    Place the Sauce ingredients in a large frying pan, scatter sliced Onion, bring to the boil. When it is boiling, add Pork pieces evenly, and cook for a few minutes until Pork is cooked.

  3. 3

    Scatter Spring Onion evenly, then pour the whisked Eggs to cover, and cook until Egg is softly set OR half cooked. DO NOT stir.

  4. 4

    Half fill a bowl with freshly cooked Rice and cover it with the Pork and Egg mixture. Sprinkle with Shichimi (Japanese Chilli Spice Mix) if you like it, and enjoy.
