A1 Steakhouse Soup

My grandkids LOVE A1 steak sauce. My 30+ y/o granddaughter adds a bit of A1 to every spoonful she eats. Me, not so much. To me, its strong flavor overpowers and ruins the flavor of a good steak. But it's perfect in this soup! You definitely know it's there, but it doesn't overpower at all. And those who REALLY love A1 can always add more to their bowl.

Cooking Instructions

2 hours
  1. 1

Over medium-high heat, add oil to Dutch oven (or soup pot) and brown beef cubes well on all sides. Remove from pot and set aside.

  2. 2

Add onions to the soup pot. Cook, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook an additional minute until garlic is fragrant. Return the browned beef cubes to the pot.

  3. 3

Stir in all remaining ingredients EXCEPT the potatoes. Cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer for 1 hour. Add potatoes and cook, covered, 30 more minutes. Remove bay leaf and discard.

  4. 4

Serve hot with crusty rolls or cornbread. My sister likes her soup topped with a little sour cream and some grated cheddar cheese. Croutons would also be good.

My 5 siblings and I were raised in the 1950s and 60s midwest by a major foodie dad who was a great cook. We all learned to cook at a young age. I love to cook for my 2 daughters, 7 grandkids, 8 great-grandkids, and extended family. My 4 year old great-grandson makes my day when he says "Nan sure is a good cooker!". :-). I'm trying to get all my favorite recipes saved here so my family and friends all have easy access to them even after I'm gone. My Cookpad collection is their inheritance, so I try to add my comments and memories to each recipe; that way they'll remember me with a smile when they use the recipes years from now. Recently I've called on my grandkids (all adults and avid cooks) to send me their own favorite recipes, with their prep photos, so we can collect everyone's favorites together in one place.
