Boil the lal masoor dal in a pot of water keeping the level just over 2 inches. Whilst it is boiling add the onions and tomatoes. Cover and simmer for about 10 minutes.
Tip: add a little oil while simmering so that the dal doesn't overflow. - 2
Add the haldi and laal masala and let it boil till the dal is melted.

In a kadai heat ghee and add rye, jeera, curry leaves, hing and kashmiri chillies and let it sputter. Then pour the cooked dal into the kadai and mix well.

Add salt to taste.

Serve hot with rice or roti.
