Harees or Harissa or Daleem is a versatile dish that can be served in any party, get togethers or weddings. It is basically a Middle Eastern dish with boiled, cracked or broken wheat and Mutton or Chicken. Using Oats is a much quicker version of this. Eating it also differs in many parts. It is eaten on it's own as a Porridge or is eaten with bread in other Countries. It is an all time comfort food for me and my family. There is nothing better than a steaming hot plate of Harees garnished generously with fried Onions and a dash of Lemon and fried Cashews.
Daleem is a popular main course or a starter similar to Harissa and is also a statement dish at every Wedding and special Occasions here in the Hyderabad City. Infact this dish has it's roots in the UAE and the GCC.
So that's it.

Steps
- 1
In a cooking pot, heat oil and saute ginger garlic paste. Add the whole spices now. Saute them for a minute and then add the mutton bone-in followed by the masalas.
- 2
Now add the oats along with 5-6 cups of water. Cover and cook until done on a low flame for nearly 40-45 minutes. Let it cool down. Slow cooking has it's own charm. However it can be done in a pressure cooker too. That's one's own choice.
- 3
Shred the cooked mutton bone-in and discard the bones. Add the shredded meat back to the pot and simmer. Deep fry the sliced onions until golden brown. Let them cool a bit. Add them to the pot crushing a little with the hands.
- 4
Simmer it on a low flame until a desired thickness is attained. Add hot water accordingly. Garnish with fried onions and coriander along with lemon wedges. Serve hot with Salad.
