Ingredients

Serves 1 serving
  1. About 1 bowl (3/4 cup or 150 grams) cooked rice
  2. 2large eggs
  3. 1/8-1/4medium onion, finely chopped
  4. 1hot dog or sausage
  5. As needed, oil or butter
  6. 1 pinchsalt and pepper
  7. 1-2 tablespoonsketchup, to taste
  8. You can use bacon, chicken, ground meat, or any protein you have in the fridge instead of sausage!
  9. Note: The amount of onion listed in the ingredients and steps was different; the correct amount is in the steps. Updated October 1, 2016. Sorry for the confusion!

Steps

  1. 1

    Ingredients (serves 1):
    2 large eggs
    1 sausage
    1/8 to 1/4 onion

    Finely chop the onion. Cut the sausage into bite-sized pieces as you like. (Photos 2–5 show a double batch for 2 servings.)

    Heat oil or butter in a pan and sauté the onion and sausage.

    When mostly cooked, add the rice and stir-fry. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

    Add ketchup and stir until everything is evenly coated.

    Shape the ketchup rice on a plate into your desired form.

    Beat the eggs and season as you like. You can add salt, pepper, sugar, or shredded cheese. We usually keep it plain.

    Pour the beaten eggs into a heated pan.

    Gently stir the eggs with a spatula and push them to one side of the pan.

    When the eggs are still slightly runny, flip them over and cook the other side briefly. While still soft, place the omelet on top of the rice on the plate. (See photo 11.)

    Place the omelet on top of the ketchup rice.

    Make a straight cut down the center of the omelet (about halfway through the thickness), then gently open it to reveal the creamy inside.

    Your fluffy, creamy omurice is ready!

    Top with your favorite sauce and enjoy!
