Kid-Friendly Easy Budget-Friendly Bean Sprout Mapo Tofu

A mild, Japanese-style mapo tofu that both kids and adults can enjoy! Using bean sprouts instead of onions makes it simple and budget-friendly.

Kid-Friendly Easy Budget-Friendly Bean Sprout Mapo Tofu
A mild, Japanese-style mapo tofu that both kids and adults can enjoy! Using bean sprouts instead of onions makes it simple and budget-friendly.

Cut the tofu into 1/2-inch (about 1 cm) cubes.

Roughly chop the bean sprouts to about the size of diced onions.

Heat a frying pan over medium heat, add sesame oil, then add the ground meat and cook until it changes color.

Add the tofu, bean sprouts, and 1 1/2 cups water (about 300ml, not included in ingredient list) to the pan. Bring to a boil and simmer for about 3 minutes.

Turn off the heat, add the well-mixed seasonings, stir gently, then return to medium heat.

Stir gently to thicken, being careful not to break up the tofu.

Transfer to a plate and sprinkle with chopped green onions. For adults, add chili bean paste or chili oil to taste.

O-mame115 made this with onions instead of bean sprouts. Looks like it turned out delicious with fewer seasonings!

Rii-on made this with napa cabbage. In winter, napa cabbage is a great option—it adds more umami than bean sprouts and looks delicious!
