  4. 1cupBengal gram dal
  5. 1 cupwhole mung
  6. 6red chilies
  7. 1/4cupGoodness
  8. 2 inchpeeled ginger
  9. 1/4 cupsesame seed oil
  10. 1 tspMustardseeds
  11. 1 tspfennel seeds
  12. 1 tspFenugreek seeds
  13. Pinchasafetida powder
  14. 1/2 teaspoonturmeric powder
  15. 1/4 cupcurry leaves
  16. required amount Salt

    Purple leaf-like bracts cover the clusters of flowers. (Image) Remove the thick style in the middle of banana flower. Chop the flowers finely. Soak the chopped pieces in buttermilk. For 30 minutes to remove the bitterness./ Astringent
    Then cook in the cooker until the flower gets soft. Do not overcook. Drain the water

    Soak the dals and coriander seed and etc in 4c water for 10 minutes. Drain and add ginger and red chilies and grind it to make a thick paste. Transfer to a bowl..Steam cook in a bowl. You can also steam cook as you would steam cook idlies. I cooked the dal plus paste in the microwave for 10 minutes. Let it cool.

    Heat oil in a pan over medium heat and sauté mustard seeds. let the seeds pop. Then stir in fennel seeds and asafetida powder. Sir in turmeric powder and curry leaves.
    Add the cooked banana flower and fry for 4 minutes. Using your fingers powder the cooked dal plus paste and add it banana flowers. Continue cooking over low heat for a couple of minutes.. Add salt and turn off the stove. Usili is ready. taste. transfer to a bowl. Tastes divined when mixed with rice and ghee.
