Nancy's Homemade Bread

Randy
Randy @rbarton80
Lansing, MI

Nancy has been making bread for 40+ years to give away to people who needed encouragement, were sick, were friends/family, or just needed a meal. Nancy's smile was warmer than her bread and with each loaf came the love of Christ.

Nancy is my mom. Every Monday for as long as I can remember she can be found making her bread. When I was in school the smell of fresh bread met me at the end of the driveway and we all knew there was a hot slice waiting for us inside. Many years, and 2 generations later, my kids (and the other grand-kids) and her great-grand-kids who make that same trek are still welcomed by the lingering smell of fresh bread to receive her unbelievable love wrapped in a buttery loaf.

Enjoy this recipe and be sure to give a loaf away to continue the love of my amazing mother.

Steps

5-6 hours
  1. 1

Melt shortening and set it aside to cool

  2. 2

Thoroughly mix yeast and water into a large bowl. All yeast must be dissolved.

  3. 3

Stir in salt, sugar, and cooled shortening until thoroughly dissolved (about 2 minutes)

  4. 4

Stir in 3 cups of flour

  5. 5

Stir in an additional 2 cups of flour

  6. 6

As need, or if needed, stir in another cup of flour to desired consistency. The mixer should be slightly sticky, but not impossibly to knead.

  7. 7

Knead the dough for 8 minutes.

  8. 8

Transfer the dough to a different dish while you wash and dry the bowl.

  9. 9

    Grease the clean/dry bowl.

  10. 10

Return the dough to the bowl

  11. 11

Cover the dough and allow it to rise on the stove-top over a warm oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour. (do not turn the stove-top on)

  12. 12

Knead dough 1 minute, flip, and knead 1 more minute

  13. 13

Cover and allow dough to rise for an additional 45 minutes to one hour

  14. 14

    Grease 5 bread pans

  15. 15

Divide dough into 5 equal pieces and place into greased bread pans

  16. 16

Cover dough and allow it to rise for 45 minutes. It should be about 1 inch above the top of the pan.

  17. 17

Bake at 375* for 25 minutes

  18. 18

Once baked brush melted butter onto all sides of the bread.

  19. 19

Allow bread to cool before putting the loaves into bread bags.

  20. 20

    Enjoy. Repeat.

Hello out there, I would like to try this bread recipe, however, what exactly is meant by "shortening"?? margarine?
or shortening such as lard or Crisco?
