I really love homemade foul; I find it tastier than the canned kind. Sorry the color is dark—it's because the fava beans I have are a darker variety, not the light-colored ones. One of the things I love about foul is the bean broth—it always adds a wonderful flavor and is great for making Fatteh Foul. 😍 Next time I make it, I'll try to take a better photo to show it off more nicely—this one was quick, so please excuse it.

Steps

  1. 1

Follow these steps to get whole, tender fava beans that become buttery soft when pressed. 😋 Honestly, this recipe is very successful—my husband even took some to the grocery store! 😂

  2. 2

Soak the fava beans for three days in warm water, changing the water daily and rinsing the beans in a colander under running water each time. (Soaking helps them cook faster, and since we don't have a huge pot like the ones at the store, this is the best way. You can also use a pressure cooker if you have one.)

  3. 3

On the fourth day, after changing the water and rinsing the beans well, place them in a large, deep pot and fill with water as shown in the picture.

  4. 4

Set the heat to medium-low. Cut each date in half and add them to the beans along with the salt and oil. Stir, then let the beans cook gently until tender.

  5. 5

After an hour, check the beans with a spoon to see if they're cooked. Add more water if needed, then let them continue cooking until fully tender.

  6. 6

You can control the amount of broth by not adding extra water after the first check (I made mine with extra broth because we love it). Once the beans are completely cooked, adjust the seasoning and serve them however you like.

  7. 7

    Enjoy!
