Ingredients

4 servings
  1. 1star anise
  2. 1/2 tspfennel seed
  3. 1cinnamon stick
  4. 6whole cloves
  5. 10whole Szechuan peppers
  6. 4 cupmilk
  7. 1 lbsemi sweet chocolate, chopped
  8. 1whipped cream
  9. 1ground cinnamon for garnish

Steps

    In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the anise, fennel, cinnamon stick, cloves, peppers, and milk and bring to a simmer.

    Remove from the heat and let steep for 5 minutes.

  3. 3

    Strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove the spices.

  4. 4

    Return the milk to the saucepan over medium low heat.

  5. 5

    Stir in the chopped chocolate until completely melted.

  6. 6

    Bring to a slow simmer and whisk for 30 seconds.

  7. 7

    Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

    Serve immediately.

    *Pre-mixed five spice powder is available in Asian markets and many supermarkets.*

  10. 10

    **My friend made this and she used a small mesh bag to hold all of the spices rather than having them loose and putting the hot chocolate through a sieve. You can do whichever works easier for you.**

Some of my favorite things are family, friends, my pets, cooking, baking, football (Badger & Packer), Brewer baseball, college basketball, car racing, thrift stores, volunteering, and rummage sales. I have a 9 year old rescue dog, and 7 birds ( 6 are rescue) and they range in age from 1 year to over 19 years old. I volunteer for a dog rescue and a shelter, as well as other festivals and organizations.
