This is my mother-in-law's recipe. She calls it "carne e patate" in Italian. If you are in a hurry, you can use a 14 ounce can of stewed tomatoes instead of the last 5 ingredients.

This is my mother-in-law's recipe. She calls it "carne e patate" in Italian. If you are in a hurry, you can use a 14 ounce can of stewed tomatoes instead of the last 5 ingredients.

Combine ground beef with eggs, 1 tsp salt and Worcestershire sauce. Add bread crumbs and mix well.

Put meat mixture into a 2.8 litre casserole dish and pat down.

Cover meat mixture with alternate layers of potatoes and onions, adding a bit of salt and pepper after each layer.

In a medium-sized bowl, mix diced tomatoes with sugar, basil, oregano and 1/2 tsp salt. Pour over meat and potatoes.

Cover casserole dish and bake at 350 degrees for approximately 1.5 hours or until potatoes are cooked.

Serve and enjoy!
