Ingredients

  • 2 cupswalnuts (about 300 grams)
  • 2 cupsalmonds (about 300 grams)
  • 1 1/2 cupsplain dry breadcrumbs (about 200 grams)
  • Ground cinnamon, ground cloves, ground nutmeg, vanilla extract
  • 1 packagephyllo dough
  • Syrup
  • 4 cupssugar (about 800 grams)
  • Water (enough to fill half the saucepan)
  • Orange liqueur
  • Juice of 2 lemons, chilled with ice cubes
  • 1cinnamon stick
  • Butter or olive oil

Steps

    Chop the walnuts and almonds, then mix with vanilla extract, breadcrumbs, ground cloves, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg to make the filling.

    Layer 4 sheets of phyllo dough in the bottom of a baking pan, brushing each sheet with butter or olive oil. Spread half of the filling over the phyllo. Add 2 more buttered sheets, spread the remaining filling, then cover with 4 more buttered sheets. Cut into strips and then into squares or diamond shapes.

    In a saucepan, combine the sugar, water, cinnamon stick, lemon juice, and orange liqueur or lemon liqueur. Bring to a boil and simmer until the syrup thickens.

    Once the syrup has cooled slightly, pour it over the baklava.

    Bake at 300°F (150°C) for 30 minutes, then finish with the syrup.
