Ingredients

  1. 1 lbslean ground beef
  2. 6 piecesbacon diced in small pieces
  3. 1small red bell pepper chopped (optional)
  4. 1medium yellow onion chopped
  5. 1/2-1jalapeno sliced
  6. 2 clovesminced (now if you're like me and you love garlic add 4
  7. 1 1/2 tbspchili powder (or to taste)
  8. 1 tspdried mustard
  9. 1/2 tspcrushed red pepper (optional)
  10. 1 tbspcumin
  11. Salt and pepper to taste
  12. 28 ozcan whole canned tomatoes (smashed up) add with juice
  13. 6 ozcan tomato paste (I only used half)
  14. 1 (16 oz)can pinto beans
  15. 1 (16 oz)can black beans
  16. 1 1/2 cupswater (add more if needed.)
  17. 4 dashesworcestershire sauce
  18. 2 1/2 tspbeef soup base
  19. 3 tspunsweetened cocoa powder
  20. 1 tspground cinnamon
  21. 1/2 tspsmoked paprika
  22. Optional toppings:
  23. Sour cream, shredded cheese, diced onion, tortilla chips

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

    Heat a large pot over medium heat.
    Add the bacon. Cook till brown and crispy. (Don't drain the grease.)
    Now add the ground beef. Cook till done. (Drain the grease).
    Now add the jalapeno and onion and cocoa powder and cinnamon, stir and cook until the vegetables are tender.

    Add the garlic and cook for another minute or two.

    Stir in the chili powder, dried mustard, crushed red pepper, cumin, smoked paprika, salt and pepper.

    Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, pinto beans and black beans and about 1½ cups of water, beef soup base and worcestershire sauce.
    Simmer on low for at least 1 hr.
    Take off heat and let sit for 30 minutes with the lid on so the seasonings can render together.
    Or put in crockpot on low for at least 4 hrs. Add additional water as needed for desired consistency.

    Serve with toppings of your choice.
