Beef with Onion Chives

Angela Mertoyono @tenshi
I bought one kilogram of onion chives (yes! One whole kilogram!) and decided to cook them in tasty dishes. Onion chives are hollow and they taste mild in stir-fry dishes. In Indonesia, we call it bunga bawang.
Cooking Instructions
- 1
Season beef with garlic powder. Using medium heat, stir-fry beef with oil until half-cooked.
- 2
Combine shoyu, mirin, sugar, and powdered broth. Stir well. Add into beef and stir until they dissolve.
- 3
Put onion chives into the pan. Stir well.
- 4
Lower the heat and cook for 10 minutes. Done! Serve with warm steamed rice or noodles. I think it would taste great with pasta as well.

This is an abbreviated version of Chaliapin steak (a steak marinated in onions, a Japanese western-style dish). The sautéed onions form the base of the sauce, so sauté them slowly and patiently, taking care not to let them burn.As long as the onions are well sautéed, you can make a delicious sauce with just water, without needing any wine or sake.
