Deep-frying tofu is too much work, so I shallow-fried the tofu. I made it because I wanted to recreate a dish I used to have at a Japanese pub.

It's a shame that I didn't have 'momiji oroshi' (spicy grated daikon radish) this time.

You only need to fry the top and bottom of the tofu pieces at Step 3. You don't have to fry the sides.

It's also delicious with 'momiji oroshi' (spicy grated daikon radish).

I recommend eating this with cooked soba noodles. They're pretty tasty together. For 2 servings. Recipe by Karupinetto

Ingredients

2 servings
  1. 1 blockTofu (firm or silken)
  2. 1Katakuriko
  3. 3 tbspOil
  4. 100 mlMentsuyu (concentrate)
  5. 400 mlWater
  6. 1Green onion (thinly sliced)

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

Drain the tofu and cut into 4 portions. Add the mentsuyu and water to a pot, and turn on the heat.

  2. 2

    Coat the tofu with katakuriko.

  3. 3

Add the oil to a frying pan, and shallow-fry the Step 2 tofu until it becomes golden brown (flip the tofu pieces halfway through). You just need to fry both sides.

  4. 4

Place the tofu into a serving bowl, pour in the Step 1 mentsuyu, and sprinkle with green onion on top.

  5. 5

This is a different version using eggplants. I added shallow-fried eggplants as well.

  6. 6

This is another version with eggplants and green peppers.
