Ingredients

Makes 5 rolls
  1. 5large cabbage leaves
  2. 8-9 ozground pork (or mixed ground meat)
  3. 5 slicesbacon
  4. 1/4onion
  5. 1egg
  6. 3 tablespoonsbreadcrumbs
  7. 3 cupswater
  8. 2bouillon cubes (about 1 1/3 tablespoons)
  9. Salt and pepper to taste
  10. 1 pinchnutmeg
  11. Black pepper to taste, optional

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

Blanch the cabbage leaves briefly. Lightly drain the water and trim the thick parts of the cabbage core to make rolling easier.

  2. 2

Finely chop the onion and place it in a bowl with the ground meat, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Knead the mixture together.

  3. 3

Spread out the cabbage leaves and place 1/5 of the meat mixture at the edge. Roll it up once, fold in the sides, and continue rolling. Place seam side down.

  4. 4

Wrap each roll with a slice of bacon and secure with a toothpick. Make 5 rolls in total.

  5. 5

Place the rolls seam side down in a pot, add water and bouillon cubes, and bring to a boil. Once boiling, simmer on low heat for about 20 minutes.

  6. 6

Skim off any scum. Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper, then it's done.

  7. 7

Remove the toothpicks, transfer to a plate, and sprinkle with black pepper if desired. Enjoy!
