Ingredients

  1. 1.5 cupsToor/tuvar dal/motor in bengali
  2. 1/2 tbspRefined Oil
  3. 1/2 tbspGhee
  4. 1Tomato chopped medium size
  5. 1 tbspCoriander leaves chopped
  6. 1/2 tspTurmeric powder
  7. 1/2 tspRed chilli powder
  8. to tasteJaggery a lump
  9. 1/2 tspCoriander powder
  10. 1/2 tspCumin powder
  11. to tasteLemon juice
  12. to tasteSalt
  13. 1/2 tspMustard seeds
  14. 3/4 tspCumin seeds
  15. 1/2 tspAsafoetida
  16. as neededCurry leaves a sprig
  17. 2 piecesDry red chilli
  18. 1 tbspCocum/Tamarind juice
  19. 1 inch pieceCinnamon stick
  20. 3-4 pieces Cloves
  21. as neededWater

Steps

  1. 1

    Pressure cook the dal with water for around 4-5 whistles and then churn it with a hand blender.

    Heat oil and ghee. Temper with mustard,cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, cloves,dry red chilli, curry leaves, asafoetida and let them fragrant and splutter.

    Add tomato chopped and stir everything well. Cook it for 2-3 mins until the tomato turn mushy. Then add the churned dal and water. Let it come to a boil. Bubble it on low-medium heat.Now add salt,turmeric, red chilli, cumin, coriander powder, cocum and give it a good mix.

    Add the jaggery, coriander leaves choppedand then let the dal simmer for about 8-10 mins on a low flame.Once the dal is cooked and has the proper consistency turn off the flame. Serve it hot with plain rice or roti.
