Pan de Muerto (Original Recipe)

My dear friend Lupita keeps her ancestors' recipe for making Pan de Muerto for Día de los Muertos. For Mexicans, Pan de Muerto, along with sugar skulls or marranito, are essential, and you also have to cook the favorite dish of the departed.

Steps
- 1
Mix the yeast with a little warm water, add 1/2 cup of flour, and knead until you have a soft dough. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise for about 15 minutes.
- 2
Meanwhile, sift the remaining flour with the sugar and salt. Make a well in the center and add three of the five eggs, the five egg yolks, the butter, the orange zest, and the orange blossom water. Mix the dough well.
- 3
Combine with the yeast dough, knead until both doughs are fully incorporated, and let rise until doubled in size. Divide the dough in two and shape into loaves. Place on greased baking sheets and brush with egg yolk.
- 4
Decorate with pieces of dough shaped like bones, skulls, tears, etc. Brush with egg and sprinkle with sugar.
- 5
Bake for 40 minutes in a preheated oven. Remove and let cool.
