Ingredients

  1. 1 1/2 cupcake flour
  2. 1/4 tspsalt
  3. 1/2 tspbaking powder
  4. 1/2 tspnutmeg
  5. 1 1/2 Tbspbutter
  6. 1 Tbspsugar
  7. 1large egg
  8. 1/2 tspvanilla extract
  9. 1/4 cupbuttermilk

  1. 1

    Sift together flour, salt, baking powder and nutmeg. Give a one final whisk and set aside

  2. 2

    In another bowl using a wooden spoon, lightly beat together butter and sugar until combined. Beat in the egg and vanilla until fully incorporated and lastly stir in the buttermilk

  3. 3

    Mix the dry mixture into the wet mixture and bring the dough together by lightly kneading it on a floured surface. If too wet, add more flour as needed (sometimes you'll need a lot more flour than you anticipated - that should not alarm you). Cover dough and let rest for 30 minutes

    Once rested, flour your counter top and roll the dough flat but not too thin. Using a pizza cutter cut it into squares as seen in the image

    Heat enough oil for deep frying oil on medium heat until the tip of a wooden spoon sizzles when dipped into it. Deep fry the dough squares for 3 minutes of each side or until golden brown. Drain and cool on a paper towel

  6. 6

    Enjoy with a cup of spiced tea! Other servings suggestions include: sprinkled of sugar; hot and dipped in golden syrup; glazed with white or dark chocolate ganache; or served with a honey dip
